How to Draw a Flamingo

Want to easily learn how to draw a flamingo? Whether you are in a tropical drawing mood or just love flamingos, this tutorial is just for you. Follow our step-by-step guide and you will be able to draw a flamboyance of flamingos in no time.

Before starting your flamingo drawing, get your supplies ready. With our drawing tutorials, you can use any medium you have on hand like crayons, markers, paint, Procreate, Photoshop, etc.

If you are using Procreate like we are, you can use these ink Procreate brushes to outline and color in your flamingo.

Step 1 - Roughly Sketch the Flamingo

The first step in how to draw a flamingo is making rough sketches that you can easily remove. Use a pencil or a light-colored medium that you can cover up when coloring your flamingo.



We will begin with oval shapes. We are going to sketch a large oval for the body of the flamingo. Then a smaller oval for the head.

Place your flamingo head to one side above the body. Remember to add enough space for the neck. To easily space your flamingo’s head, use the body height as a guide.

Next, sketch in the neck of your flamingo. A flamingo’s neck curves towards the head and body. It also narrows more towards the head.

On the opposite side of the head, sketch the flamingo’s beak. It will look like a pointy banana. Then sketch the wing line on the body like we did in the image below.

Lastly, sketch in the flamingo’s legs at the bottom of the body. For the legs, draw two straight lines down with a gap in the middle.

Add a circle for the knee joint on both legs. Our flamingo has one leg up, so we drew a line from the knee joint going forward. Keep in mind that a flamingo’s legs bend in a forward position. At the end of your flamingo legs draw a triangle for the foot.

Step 2 - Refine your Flamingo Sketch

We now have all our basic flamingo shapes sketched out. Next, we are going to go over them and refine the sketch. We need to connect our head, neck, and body as one shape. Then add more definition to the legs.

Step 3 - Outline your Flamingo Sketch

In this step of how to draw a flamingo, we are going to switch to a more defined medium to outline our sketch. Follow along your sketch lines to outline the beak, body, and legs of your flamingo.

Next, fill in half of your flamingo’s beak and draw a line in the center as we did. Then add an eye dot close to the beak and add more ruffles to the wing.

On the feet of your flamingo, draw two lines through it for more detail.

Once you are done outlining your flamingo, clean up your drawing by removing your sketches.

Step 4 - Color in your Flamingo

In this step, we are going to add color to our flamingo. We will use pink for the body and legs, and yellow or orange for the beak.

For the top area of your flamingo, use a pink that is a lighter shade than the rest of the body. Use a light, pale pink for the flamingo legs with some hot pink dots/marks to add some texture.

Then use orange or yellow to color in the beak. There you go, your flamingo is now done.
