How to Draw a Ladybug

In today’s beginner drawing tutorial, we are showing you how to draw a ladybug. Apply your bug illustration to any seasonal and special crafts you have planned. Use them for Valentine's day cards, sublimated on baby clothes for extra cuteness, or add them to your drawing portfolio.

Before we begin with our drawing guide, gather the supplies you want to use for your ladybug illustration. These supplies can be traditional mediums such as acrylic paint, and pencils, or digital applications like Procreate and DesignScape.

Step 1 - Make Rough Sketches of your Ladybug

For our first step, you will need a sketching medium to make your ladybug sketch. Use any medium you have on hand, such as a pencil or light color of your drawing medium.

Create the Body

In your drawing area, start drawing a circle for the body. Your circle doesn’t have to be perfect, so you can draw it free-hand or use a circular object to trace around. Using the QuickShape tool in Procreate will also give you a perfect circle.

Above your circle, draw the head of your ladybug, by drawing a half circle. The head should be half the width of the body.

Add the Wings

Sketch two half circles for the wings going over the body of your ladybug. You can make the wings a circle with a line through the center to close them. Alternatively, draw two half circles that rotate outward just like ours to make your winged bug sketch.

Add the Antenna and Dots

On top of the head of your ladybug drawing, sketch two antennae that curl to the sides. Then, draw a couple of small circles spaced out on the wings to create the dots.

Step 2 - Define your Ladybug Rough Sketch

With our rough sketches complete, exchange your sketch medium for an outlining tool. For your ladybug outlines, you can make use of any defining medium such as a marker, pen, or black-colored medium.

We are going to outline the wings and dots first to avoid outlining sketches we do not want to include in our drawing.

With the wings outlined, we can then trace over the remaining sketch lines at the bottom, head, and antennas. Next, remove your rough sketches if you used an erasable sketch medium.

Step 3 - Add your Colors to your Ladybug

In the third and final step, you will need your coloring supplies. For our ladybug illustration, we are using watercolor brushes in Procreate to apply our red and black. You can change your drawing to any other color you have on hand.
