How to Draw a Star

In today’s beginner drawing guide, you will learn how to draw a star. You can create a simple star or something more complex by following a few basic steps. Apply your drawing as is to your crafts or combine it to make designs for galaxy clipart and sublimated tumblers.

With this easy-to-follow star drawing tutorial, you can use various tools from traditional mediums, such as markers and crayons, or digital drawing apps like Procreate.

Step 1 - Create your Rough Star Sketch

To get started, you will need some basic materials to create your sketch. You will need a sketching medium such as a pencil, eraser, and ruler.

Draw a Guide

To help us create a star, draw a vertical line on your drawing area. Then, use your ruler to draw a pentagon. Make sure your pentagon is centered on the vertical line and a point is at the bottom with a flat top.

Add the Star Points

On each side of your pentagon, draw a line from each corner that meet to create a triangle shape. Use the measurements on your ruler to make each point of your star illustration the same length.

Why not try a complex star with more points, as we did below? You only need to sketch a different shape, such as an octagon, and make longer points.

Step 2 - Define your Rough Sketch

In our second step, you will need to switch to a dark or permanent medium. Use an ink Procreate brush, lining tool, or pen to make your star outline. Carefully trace over your sketch lines to define the outer shape of your star.

Turn your basic outline into a three-dimensional star by adding a line, as we did with our line art below.

Step 3 - Add Color to your Outline

Switching to your coloring supplies, you can add your favorite color palette to your star clipart in this step. If you do not have a color palette, you can use any available colors and shades.

Make minimal or detailed drawings by adding color in different ways. Add them generally as we did with our five-pointed star, or apply multiple shades and blend colors in Procreate using one of four methods.

Your star illustration is complete! Combine your drawing with glitter overlays to make the ultimate sparkly craft or project. We can only imagine how glamorous a tumbler will look decorated in glitter and your hand-drawn artwork.
