How to Draw a Haunted House

Create a spooky house with our easy-to-follow how to draw a haunted house tutorial. In four simple steps, your Halloween drawing will be ready to use on your next craft or project. Follow this drawing guide to add your illustration to wall prints, stickers, and sublimated t-shirts.

Before we start with the steps, get your supplies together. For this free drawing tutorial, you will need sketching, outlining, and coloring materials. If you're using a digital app, use a shape feature or a grid paper to help draw straight lines.

Step 1 - Create the House Base Shape

Using a sketching tool, such as a pencil, start creating the base shape of your haunted house sketch. If you don't have a pencil, use a light-colored coloring medium.

Draw the Walls

Sketch rectangular and squared shapes to create the walls. Your shapes can be straight or tapered like our example below. We drew a foundation and four main wall sections.

Add the Roof

Shape the roof on top of each wall section. Make your haunted house sketch unique by making each roof different. See our red lines in our example below.

Step 2 - Add Details to the Haunted House

With the base house shape sketched, we can now add details, such as windows, a door, and textures.

Windows and Door

Draw the door shape on the main wall of your house. Then, using a variety of shapes, such as arches, circles, and rectangles, add the windows.

Texture and Features

Create random sketch lines on the walls and roof to create texture. Inside each window, draw lines for the dividers, then add features to bring your Halloween sketch to life. For our spooky drawing, we added spider webs in corners, a door cover, and steps in the foundation shape (shown in green).

Step 3 - Permanently Line your Sketch

Let’s create a polished line art-style haunted house outline using a dark medium. Your lining medium can be anything that will make your sketch lines stand out, such as a pen, marker, or Procreate ink brush.

Carefully define the outer lines of the walls, roof, windows, door, and details. Add more detail to your artwork by creating framed windows.

For the textures, we used colors to define them. You can see how it looks in our final step.

Step 4 - Add Color to your Illustration

To finish our haunted house illustration, we need to add some color. You can use any color combination and coloring medium you have on hand. For our drawing, we used shades of purple and a versatile Procreate brush set.
