How to Draw a Jellyfish

Do you want to learn how to draw a jellyfish step by step with us today? With thousands of species living in our oceans, these extraordinary sea creatures are easy to draw for beginners. Before we begin with our drawing lesson steps, get your supplies together. You can use any medium on hand to make rough sketches and outlines and add color. We are using Procreate, and realistic watercolor Procreate brushes to create our easy jellyfish drawing.

Step 1 - Create Rough Sketches of your Jellyfish

Let us begin our simple jellyfish drawing by creating rough sketches first. For your rough sketches, you can use any light-colored or pencil medium. Do not worry about making perfect sketches, as you will cover up or erase them in the second step.

Create your Jellyfish Head

To create the head, also known as the bell of your jellyfish, sketch an oval shape that is flat at the bottom. Then, on the bottom, in a curved shape, make a wavy line for the bottom edge of your jellyfish.

Add the Oral Arms and Tentacles

Add the oral arms and tentacles inside the bottom edge of the head. The oral arms look like wavy shapes at the bottom of the jellyfish. These hold the stinging cells of this fantastic creature. Next, add a couple of curved lines for the tentacles.

Step 2 - Line your Jellyfish Rough Sketches

With your rough sketches done, swap to your lining medium. With your lining tool, trace over the sketch lines that you want to make permanent to create your jellyfish outline.

We used different shades of blue instead of black for our line drawing. Using color for your lining can create a seamless look when adding color.

In Procreate, you can use the brushes provided, or these ink Procreate brushes. When you have traced all of your sketch lines, you can remove any sketches that are left.

Step 3 - Add Color to your Jellyfish

Let’s add some color to our ocean life drawing in our final step. Use any color you want or one that matches your outline. We used realistic watercolor brushes to add our blue and create depth on our jellyfish.
