Explore the wild side of your art skills with our tutorial on how to draw a koala
In today's drawing guide, we are exploring cute animals with our tutorial on how to draw a koala! These adorable and iconic Australian marsupials have captured people's hearts worldwide with their fluffy ears, large noses, and sleepy expressions. In this beginner-friendly tutorial, we'll guide you through sketching out the basic koala shape, adding fur texture and detailing the face, and finishing with coloring that will make your animal drawing come to life.

You can create various crafts and projects with your koala illustration, such as clipart, Aussie-themed sublimations, or birthday party decor, combining your drawing with other cute animal clipart.
You will need a sketching, lining, and color medium to create your fluffy koala. These mediums can be traditional media or digital drawing apps such as Procreate.
Step 1 - Sketch the Shape of the Koala
Let's begin this drawing exercise by creating the shape of our koala using a sketching medium. You can use any soft, erasable, or light-colored tool to make your sketches.
Start drawing a large circle for the head and a smaller circular shape below it for the body.

Sketch two large half-circles on both sides of the head to shape the koala ears. Then, at the bottom of the body, add two small ovals for the feet.

Finish the base shape of your koala drawing by adding arms and a bit more form to the bottom of the body. You can view our example sketch below to see how we drew the arms (shown in blue) and added shape to the bottom of the body in red.

Step 2 - Add the Koala Features
With the base shape of your koala sketched, it's time to add features such as the face and chest fluff. Start by drawing a smaller half-circle inside the ear to create a separation.
Then below the head, between the arms, draw a flame shape upside down to create a fluffy chest.

Finally, add the large koala nose, eyes, and mouth inside the head. Feel free to add extra features and details, like eyebrows, shape on the feet, or hair details.

Step 3 - Refine the Koala Outline
Now that you have your koala's basic shape and details, it's time to refine the outline. Use a darker pencil, black medium, or ink Procreate brush to trace over the lines you want to keep. Make sure to define the open areas first and add hair lines to add texture.

Continue tracing the rest of your sketch lines for the face and body. Once you have created your koala line art, go ahead and remove your remaining rough sketches.

Step 4 - Apply Color and Texture
In our fourth and final step, we are going to add color, texture, and shading to our koala clipart. You can use any color you have on hand or select a ready-made color palette to compliment your animal or theme.

Create dimension and depth using lighter and darker color shades. We have a fantastic tutorial on how to blend colors in Procreate using four methods.

Congratulations, you've now drawn a koala! With some practice, you can create more detailed and realistic drawings. Don't be afraid to experiment with different shapes, colors, and shading techniques to create an animal that's unique and special to you.
