How to Draw a Seahorse

In today’s drawing lesson, we are guiding you through the steps on how to draw a seahorse. Add your seahorse illustration to all your ocean crafts and projects. This can be printable stickers for party packs, clipart, or sublimated on keychains and tumblers. Who wouldn’t want a personalized tumbler or tote with your cute illustration?

To get started with your sea creature drawing you will need to gather your supplies. For this drawing guide, you can use traditional mediums like paint and pencils, as well as digital programs such as Procreate or DesignScape.

Step 1 - Create Sketches of your Seahorse

Let’s begin our drawing lesson by creating rough sketches first. To make your sketches, you can use a removable pencil or a light-colored medium. You will find our guide images below each section with a number one to six to show you the sketch progression.

Start at the top with your seahorse's head. First, sketch a circle, then on the left side, draw a long rounded curved line for the mouth. See our second seahorse sketch below.

Next, create the belly shape by drawing a large oval, about double the height of the head. Draw your oval at a slight angle with the circle and the left side in line with each other.

Between the head and oval, create a small curved line as we did in sketch four, and add the curling tail at the bottom.

Lastly, add a wavy line from the top of the head, curving down toward the tail. Add the final details like the eyes, and fins on the head and at the back of the oval.

Step 2 - Create a Defined Seahorse Outline

With a dark-colored medium such as a pen or marker, trace your seahorse sketch. There are some sketch lines that overlap or that you would not want to outline, so be sure to pay close attention.

First, trace the fins and eyes. We filled in the eyes and left three spots white. Then trace around the outer sketches of your whole seahorse, including the head, belly, and tail.

Once you are done, erase your rough sketches or cover them up in the next step.

Step 3 - Add Color to your Seahorse

In our final step, you will need to use your coloring mediums. Use any color you have on hand or get ready-made color palettes for a cohesive drawing.

For our water creature clipart, we used shades of purple, creating a cool wavy pattern on the back half of our seahorse.

With this Procreate texture brush set, we added a fun dot pattern on the back and a speckled texture to the rest of our seahorse.
