How to Edit Default Material Settings in Cricut Design Space

Cricut Design Space makes life pretty easy for users with its recommended material settings. If you're not sure where to start with a new material, your Cricut can guide you.

Sometimes, however, you might find that those recommended settings don't always work as well as you'd expect. Luckily, you can easily change those settings and find what works best for you to get custom material settings in Cricut Design Space.

If you find that you are using a custom material often, but need to change the default settings then follow along with this tutorial so you don’t need to change the settings each time.

1. Open Design Space.

Open Design Space and click on New Project. From there a blank canvas will open where you can upload an SVG File. Click on the Upload button, and then locate the file from your computer and click upload again.

2. Click Make It.

3. Click Continue.

You will see your files added to the mat. If you have multiple layers and colors, you should see your design divided into separate mats based on the color of each layer.

If you need to move the pieces so they aren’t so close to each other you can select one of them and move it down a little bit. This will make taking it off the mat and weeding a little easier.

4. Click Browse All Materials.

Make sure the dial on your Cricut is set to Custom. Then you will be able to browse all materials. This is located above the material options.

5. Click Material Settings.

Then scroll to the material you want to edit.

When you've found the material you want to adjust, click theEdit button.

6. Change the Settings.

You can change the cut force (i.e. how much pressure the Cricut machine uses), the default blade, and can turn the multi-cut feature on or off.

I selected the Felt Material which Cricut Design Space defaults to the Fine Point Blade and switched it to Deep Point Blade.

If you have a Cricut Maker, the Rotary Blade may work better, so you can select Rotary Blade from the drop down menu. We have a video showing you everything you need to know about your Cricut Maker and using the Rotary Blade to cut felt.

Once you are happy with your settings hit Save and exit out of the materials settings list.

7. Cut the project.

Now when you go to cut the project, your default settings for Felt should be updated to use the Deep-Point clamp instead.

If you want to go back to the Fine Point Blade as your default for felt, you don't have to worry about remembering the cut force number. You can go back to Material Settings and find Felt, click the Edit button and then click Reset. This will restore Cricut's default settings.

If you would rather change the blade one time and keep the default settings in place, then after you select your material you can click Choose Another Blade in Step 2 of the Cricut cut settings.
